Aside from the apparent benefits of pleasure and intimacy, healthy sex lives have many other upsides. These include improving cognitive ability and boosting the immune system. Lowering stress levels and alleviating pain. You don’t have to be with a partner to reap these and other benefits. Most are achievable if you are on your own too.
No matter if you are in a relationship or flying solo here are ten health benefits of a healthy sex life for women:
Regular sex stimulates the production of antibodies including immunoglobulin A (IgA). It works to strengthen your immune system. Research shows that IgA levels were 30% higher in those who have sex more than once a week compared to those who abstain helping to provide greater resilience against colds and flu while allowing you to recover from illness much more quickly.
According to Dr Lauren Streicher MD. of the Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Regular sex increases vaginal lubrication, elasticity and blood flow. Not only does this make sex more enjoyable but it can make you crave more of it as well.
Regular sex can significantly increase the strength of pelvic floor muscles. This can lead to better bladder control and reduces the risk of incontinence later in life. Pregnancy and menopause can weaken these muscles. So the more they are exercised, the better it is for you. Sexual intercourse is also more enjoyable than the alternative of completing pelvic floor exercises with kegel balls. Although once these muscles are already weak, you will have much more enjoyable intercourse by doing kegel exercises. Plus kegel balls can be highly enjoyable and fun too.
In general, any aerobic exercise is good for the heart and lowering blood pressure. Sex also releases serotonin and endorphins which can help keep estrogen levels in balance. It also helps to relieve stress and relaxes arteries in the body which helps to lower blood pressure.
Some time ago it was believed that sex increased the risk of heart attack due to extra pressure applied to the heart during intercourse. Researchers at Queens University Belfast, however, found that having sex at least three times a week can halve the risk of having a heart attack. A separate study in Israel also showed that women who had at least two orgasms a week were 30% less likely to suffer from heart disease than those who did not.
Researchers at the Mayo clinic in California have found that the brain releases endorphins during sexual intercourse which can help to relieve pain. Beverly Whipple PhD (who discovered and researched the G-spot) also studied pain thresholds during sex. The results showed that women's pain threshold increased by 80% during pleasurable stimulation of the G-spot and a massive 108% following an orgasm.
Just before orgasm both male and females release prolactin that helps you feel relaxed and sleepy. For women regular sex also increases estrogen levels which can improve the quality of sleep.
During sex, the brain releases large doses of the feel-good hormones Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin. Dopamine is one of the most potent neurotransmitters that make us feel more confident while Serotonin helps to regulate mood, sleep and sexual desire. Oxytocin is known as the 'love hormone' and helps you feel more connected to your partner with feelings on empathy. All of these hormones also help to reduce cortisol levels in the body which is the hormone released when you are stressed.
A joint study by the Cornell and New York Universities showed that male and female students who participated in regular casual sexual activity showed higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of anxiety than those who didn't.
During sex, women release oestrogen which is a crucial hormone for the development of collagen which can help to improve the underlying strength and structure of the skin. Oestrogen also plays vital roles in the female reproductive system. Research shows that women who have sex more than once a week have higher oestrogen levels than women who don't.
The natural steroid DHEA is known as the anti-ageing hormone which is released during sex to assists in keeping your body more youthful for longer.
